Police Chief Leonard Papania got approval Tuesday from the City Council to spend $1 million over five years to equip his officers with body cameras and dashboard cameras.
“We’ve been looking at cameras for years,” he said.
When he saw the BodyWorn brand of cameras by Utility Inc., Papania said he knew they were the devices for Gulfport.
“We are not the only community with them on the Coast,” he said.

Biloxi and Long Beach also use that brand of cameras, he said, and other departments are considering them.
Collaborative efforts among the police departments is becoming more common in South Mississippi, he said.
It will take 30 to 60 days for the first cameras to arrive and go into use in Gulfport.
