A vehicle heading east on Interstate 10 hit and killed a pedestrian near Exit 2 in Hancock County around 8 p.m. Friday, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Chase Elkins said.
Elkins said the pedestrian, a man from Donaldson, La., died at the scene. The victim was walking in the left lane after parking his car in the right-hand emergency lane when he was struck by a 2009 Mercedes driven by Edith Simmons of Houston.
Simmons was taken to Hancock Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, Elkins said.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said both eastbound lanes were blocked for nearly two hours as officials worked to clear the road.
The lanes reopened about 10:30 p.m., according to an MDOT alert.
In the past three weeks, four pedestrians have been hit by cars in Hancock County and two of them have died.
