Official: He fell after taking a swing at a man — but he never got up

Hancock County sheriff’s officials are investigating the death of a man who apparently fell while attempting to fight another man at a trailer park on Lower Bay Road off U.S. 90 on Tuesday.

Chief Deputy Don Bass said Friday that Joseph Norman Willette, 55, died at a hospital in New Orleans on Wednesday.

Bass said deputies responded to the trailer park behind the Log Cabin bar Tuesday at about 10 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they discovered Willette lying on the ground and semi-conscious.

Witnesses said that Willette and another man had gotten into an argument and that Willette tried to swing at the other man, Bass said.

“He took a swing and missed,” Bass said. “He hit the ground really hard, and this is what led to his demise.”

Bass said both men were “intoxicated.”

Willette was transported to Hancock Medical Center and then to a hospital in New Orleans.

Bass said investigators have yet to determine if the incident was an accident or if foul play was involved.
