Joby Bennett, 19, died Saturday after he was hit by a car while looking for a dog on U.S. 90 in Pearlington.

A 19-year-old man from Pearlington who pulled over on Old Highway 90 Saturday night to help a woman look for a dog was struck by a vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene, Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk said.

Joby Bennett, 19, parked his pickup truck in the roadway to help the woman, Faulk said. The accident occurred just over the Mississippi line near the Cowan Bayou Bridge.

The vehicle missed Bennett’s truck but struck the teen and the woman who were standing in the emergency lane, Faulk said, and the woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesperson Chase Elkins said the female victim was alert Sunday afternoon. Elkins said the 35-year-old woman is recovering from broken bones. Her identity has not yet been released to the public.

Elkins said the dog Bennett and the woman were looking for was a stray.

The driver of the vehicle that hit both victims stopped down the road from the accident site, Faulk said.

The accident is still under investigation.

Joby Bennett’s mother, Pam Bennett, said her son was returning home sometime after 10:30 p.m. when he stopped to help the woman in need.

“He’s my hero,” Bennett said of her youngest child.
