KILN -- Hancock County authorities are investigating the death of 1-year-old boy who suffered traumatic head injuries Thursday in Kiln, sheriff's Cmdr. Glenn Grannan said.

Grannan said authorities responded to a home on Kiln Acres Road on Thursday and found toddler suffering from cerebral bleeding and hemorrhaging.

"He had difficulty breathing because he had blood in his lungs," Grannan said.

The child was at his grandparents' home, Grannan said, where he and his mother lived.

He was taken to Hancock Medical Center in Bay St. Louis and was later airlifted to Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. He died just after midnight Saturday, Grannan said.

Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk said he will take the body of 15-month-old Maddox Vieregge to the state medical examiner for autopsy.

Authorities are investigating Maddox's death but don't have any information yet to release to the public.

"We are definitely investigating it," Grannan said.

Grannan did not say how the child was injured, but he said officials have collected witness accounts.

The child's death "is under investigation pending autopsy reports and final reports from the hospital," Chief Deputy Don Bass said. "At that point, we will know which direction we will take."
