Train hits camper stalled on tracks in Cleremont Harbor
A couple escaped injury, but their camper was destroyed Monday after it got stuck on the tracks and was hit by an oncoming train.
Officials said a truck pulling a camper stalled on the railroad tracks at Clermont Boulevard in Hancock County as a train approached about 8:50 a.m.
Hancock County Chief Deputy Don Bass said the trailer itself, a 38-foot camper, got stuck and dislodged from the truck, allowing the couple pulling the camper to get a safe distance away from the oncoming train.
The train smashed into the camper trailer, launching debris in all directions. Bass said the couple told officers the 2016 camper was valued at $100,000.
They were leaving Buccaneer State Park after spending the weekend camping when the accident occurred. No one was injured.
"A lot of things get stuck there," Bass said.
