Coast 2-year-old accidentally shoots himself after finding gun in nightstand, sheriff says
A 2-year-old Kiln boy accidentally shot himself in the head Saturday and is recovering after being airlifted to a New Orleans hospital, Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam told the Sun Herald.
The shooting occurred on Ivanhoe Drive in the Ridgewood subdivision off Mississippi 43. The highway leads drivers from Kiln to Picayune.
The boy’s father had fallen asleep when the toddler found the loaded gun in a nightstand, Adam said, and was hit by a bullet when the gun discharged.
The toddler was flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans and is in stable condition, Adam said. He is expected to be transported to Children’s Hospital on Monday to continue recovery.
Adam said the shooting is under investigation.
“This appears to be a horrific accident that I would not wish on anyone,” Adam said.” I hope people will take this opportunity to ensure that they take the proper precautions with any firearm in their house. People need to think about those whom not only live in the house, but that may access the house as guest as well.”
