Coast teen killed after being hit by car on MA college campus. ‘I’m at a loss for words.’
Bay St. Louis is mourning the loss of a 19-year-old Our Lady Academy graduate who was killed on her college campus Tuesday night after being hit by a car.
Elena Lucore was struck by a vehicle across from the visitors center on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus about 9 p.m., according to a report from the Sea Coast Echo.
Lucore was walking with a friend on Massachusetts Avenue when she was hit. The friend was not injured, police said.
The Sea Coast Echo reports Lucore was taken to a local hospital after being struck and was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the car that hit Lucore was a 21-year-old student, who told police he was driving home from the library. He remained on scene and was cooperative with police, according to a statement from the Northwestern Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators said it was raining when the accident occurred, the Sea Coast Echo reported.
“Elena, from Bay St. Louis, MS, was majoring in business,” according to a statement released by UMass Amherst Dean of Students Dr. Evelyn Ashley. “She passed away as a result of being struck by a car last evening on Massachusetts Ave. Police indicate that visibility was poor at the time due to weather conditions.
“During this difficult time, I urge you to reach out for assistance, or to direct others as appropriate. The news of this loss may be challenging for many in our community; resources are available for that support.”
Elena is the daughter of Peter and Laura Lucore of Bay St. Louis.
Peter Lucore posted an emotional tribute after Elena’s passing.
“It was the happiest 19 years of my life being baffled, angered, amazed and so, so proud of this young woman. I’m at a loss for words,” he wrote on Facebook, adding a childhood photo and senior portrait of Elena. “Please keep us in your prayers.”

The incident is still under investigation.
