Officers with the Department of Marine Resources are rescued three people stranded on a sailboat near the Silver Slipper Casino, an official confirmed.

Spokeswoman Melissa Scallan said the DMR got a call that three people are stranded on the boat, and it has hit rocks and is taking on water.

The Coast Guard was called and declined to dispatch anyone to the scene as Hurricane Nate moves toward South Mississippi, so DMR Chief Keith Davis decided sent two officers in a 25-foot vessel to rescue the people.

Scallan said the three people were rescued and safe about 4:40 p.m.

This is the last rescue the DMR will answer until after Nate has passed.

“This is the last time,” she said. “We will not put any of our officers in danger again. People need to heed the warnings.”

Nate is expected to bring hurricane-force winds and storm surge to parts of South Mississippi. It is projected to make landfall near Jackson County as a Category 2 hurricane.
