Man shoots himself during traffic stop in Lakeshore, Hancock deputy says

A man shot himself during a traffic stop Thursday evening in the Lakeshore community, a Hancock County sheriff’s official said.

A deputy pulled over a vehicle near Lakeshore Drive and Lower Bay Road, said Hancock County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Don Bass. The area is near Kent and Sue’s Quick Stop, less than a mile away from South Hancock Elementary.

Bass said the man pulled out a gun and shot himself during the traffic stop.

The man, who Bass says is from Louisiana, was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile for treatment.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Bass said the sheriff’s deputy did not fire his gun and the case is not an officer-involved shooting.

The incident is under investigation.
