Man struck and killed by SUV while walking near South MS fairgrounds, authorities say

A man walking on Old Highway 63 in George County died after an SUV struck him Thursday evening, the Sheriff’s Office said.

George County Coroner Deeann Murrah identified the victim as James Attaway, 43, of Lucedale.

The Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred near the George County fairgrounds.

It is unclear if the driver will be charged. The Sheriff’s Office called the accident tragic and said no further details were available Friday.

The Sheriff’s Office is “actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident,” it said in a news release. “Please keep all involved in your prayers.”

Authorities also asked pedestrians who walk at night to wear reflective or bright clothing, take sidewalks or walk facing traffic, carry flashlights and avoid distractions, including headphones.
