Final radio call goes out for George County Sheriff Welford after funeral

GEORGE COUNTY - Just before noon today, a call went out on law enforcement radios announcing that George County Sheriff Garry Welford was 10-7, police code for no longer in service.

The call went out following funeral services for the 63-year-old two-term sheriff, who was killed Wednesday following a vehicle chase.

Welford was placing spike strips in a road to stop a maroon truck, when the vehicle struck him. He died an hour later an Alabama hospital. Two people have been charged with capital murder in the killing.

Hundreds attended Welford's funeral service today at Shady Grove Baptist Church, including in and out-of-state law enforcement officers, residents and friends, colleagues, judges and others, including Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant.
