Tornado damages church in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY – An early morning tornado caused damage to a church building here Friday, ripping back the roof of the parish hall at St. Matthew's Catholic Church.

No injuries were reported from the twister, which tracked into Mississippi from Louisiana.

“It was like a freight train came through,” said Rev. Noel Fannon, St. Matthew's Parish priest. He said the tornado struck at 1:30 a.m. It also caused minor damage to a shed father down the road.

Ken Graham, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Slidell, said the tornado is believed to have started in St. Tammany Parish, La., before skipping into Mississippi. Read Saturday's Sun Herald for more details on the tornado and damages to the church building.
