Moss Point Board of Aldermen approve police officer, dispatcher raises

Police Chief Sheila Smallman received a unanimous nod for requested pay raises for Moss Point police officers and dispatchers.

Aldermen on Tuesday approved increases of $2 per hour for officers and $1.50 per hour for dispatchers. The increase puts starting pay for officers at slightly less than $30,000, said Mayor Xavier Bishop.

Smallman said the raises make Moss Point compatible with neighboring Jackson County cities. "I wish I could have gotten more, but it's a start," she said.

Smallman is also awaiting approval of several new officers for the department. Some are lateral transfers from other agencies and others are new hires, she said.
