A pregnant woman and her passengers — two children and a man — escaped serious injuries Wednesday when the Jeep Liberty she was driving overturned in a crash with an 18-wheeler, a police spokesman said.
The 11:06 a.m. crash at U.S. 49 near Duckworth Road temporarily stalled northbound traffic, police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said.
Traffic in the right lane was moving slowly shortly after noon.
McDaniel said the roadway was cleared after the heavily damaged 18-wheeler was removed from the left lane.
The woman and her passengers were taken by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution, he said. The woman complained of pain but didn’t appear to have serious injuries.
The Jeep and a Peterbilt 18-wheeler with a box trailer were both northbound side by side with the Jeep in the right lane. A preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Jeep accelerated to pull over in the 18-wheeler’s lane and didn’t make it, McDaniel said.
The Jeep partially overturned as the 18-wheeler pushed it into a crossover. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
The vehicles came to rest in front of a Circle K convenience store.
