South Mississippi residents aren’t strangers to fishing and grilling, and this week’s seminars aim to boost your knowledge of fishing while offering a healthy approach to barbecuing and grilling.
On Thursday, fishing for white trout and ground mullet will be demonstrated from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s Caylor Auditorium in Ocean Springs. As a part of the “Catch More Fish with Science” series, this seminar will be led by Benjamin Weldon, marine education specialist of the Marine Education Center and captain of the Silver Dollar III.
Weldon will discuss fish biology, where to find schools of white trout and ground mullet and how to catch them fast. Attendees will also learn about making baits and lures, tackle and techniques. After questions, enjoy a fish fry featuring the night’s targeted catch. Cost: $30. Details: 818-8833.
From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jim Matthews will hold an outdoor cooking seminar focused on grilling food with a healthy approach at the Orange Grove Public Library. The two-part lecture will cover the history of barbecue and the basics of outdoor cooking.
He will sign his book “Barbecue with Benefits: A Guide to Healthier Grilling and Smoking” and show attendees how best to fire up the grill without sacrificing flavor. His book offers more than 200 healthy recipes incorporating good fats and carbohydrates. Details: 493-3365.
