Gulfport man wanted in killing extradited from Florida
The man arrested in central Florida for the slaying of a Gulfport man was extradited to Gulfport on Saturday.
Juwan Johnson, 18, was booked into Harrison County jail 11:30 a.m. on one count of murder and three counts of drive-by shooting.
Johnson is accused in the fatal shooting of Stanton Saunders, 21, of Gulfport, on June 8.
Saunders collapsed in the street on 34th Avenue at Ganges Street in North Gulfport after he was seen running as shots were fired at him. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators believe Saunders had been in a fight with Johnson on Kentucky Avenue south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Johnson pulled a gun and fired several shots at Saunders as Saunders tried to run away, Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said.
Authorities in Lake County, in central Florida, took Johnson into custody June 23.
He is being held on a $1 million bond on the murder charge and on $100,000 on each drive-by shooting count.
Saunders’ death was the sixth in Gulfport since January, and the fourth homicide reported in North Gulfport this year.
