Steam release at Margaritaville prompts evacuation of 4th floor

A steam release set off a fire alarm and caused the evacuation of one floor of the new Margaritaville Resort Biloxi, fire officials said.

The Biloxi Fire Department responded to the resort, which opened on Thursday, around 8 p.m. Sunday. There was no fire.

A malfunction caused the steam release on the 11th floor, said Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney.

Such a malfunction is not uncommon in new buildings, Boney said. Firefighters isolated and shut down the steam release and reset the alarm. The steam problem can be fixed later.

The 11th floor was briefly evacuated, but patrons were allowed to return within an hour.
