It's that time again.

Hurricane season starts June 1 and this week is national Hurricane Preparedness Week.

While many seasoned Gulf Coastians prefer to stick their proverbial heads in the sand until gas station lines back up and cones of uncertainty narrow into a bullseye, it's best to always be prepared.

To spice up the usual checklist, here are some survival tools and gadgets that utilize new technologies.

The specific products mentioned are in the middle to upper price range, but lower-cost versions of most these items are available at local outdoor stores and online. Keep in mind some of these items could sit unused for years, so quality should come into consideration.

Colorado State University's annual forecast study predicts an average hurricane season, with a 30 percent chance of one major storm on the Gulf Coast.

Remember, always evacuate if instructed to do so. Have a plan in place, let others know where you are going, and leave early enough to not get caught in severe weather.

But if you're caught without power, here are some suggested additions to your standard disaster kit.
