UPDATE: Police shoot man with gun on Popp's Ferry Bridge in Biloxi

BILOXI -- A Biloxi police officer shot a man on the Popps Ferry Bridge on Thursday night after motorists reported the man had a gun, officials said.

Officers responded to the area about 8 p.m. after they got several calls about someone with a gun on the bridge, Police Chief John Miller said.

The man police shot was taken to a hospital and no information about his condition was released.

The Harrison County coroner later arrived on scene but neither he nor police officials would comment.

Gulfport police and the Harrison County Sheriff's Office were also called for assistance. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take over the scene, Miller said.

It is not yet clear how many shots police fired or whether the man fired any shots.

The Popp's Ferry Bridge remains closed.

Police officers on the Coast have shot at least two other people so far this month.

On Tuesday, D'Iberville police shot at an 18-year-old who pointed a weapon at an officer, Police Chief Wayne Payne said. The officer fired toward the teen but did not hit him. Payne said the teen was attempting “suicide by cop.”

A week prior to that, Gautier police responding to a domestic violence call killed a man in a shootout after a two-hour standoff.
