Developer wants to put condotel on Deer Island

A developer wants to build a condotel resort on Deer Island, he told the city of Biloxi today.

Larry Mitrenga presented his proposal to the Design and Review committee this morning.

"I see myself, 10 years from now, tending bar and cooking cheeseburgers on Deer Island," he told the review committee. "This is a zero impact development. There will be no roads."

Mitrenga's proposal is to develop an 8-acre parcel on the west side of the island. The property goes to the waterfront on the north side of the island.

The development, the Oasis at Deer Island, would include eight buildings that will be elevated and designed to withstand Category 5 hurricane winds. He envisions condotels with a tiki club restaurant and a pavillion for outdoor activities.

Utilities would be brought, under water, from the mainland.

Three water ferrys would shuttle people from the mainland to Deer Island. Mitrenga said he has no plans to include a casino in the development.

Mitrenga is asking for a zoning change to accommodate the project as well as approval of the plans.
