BILOXI - The father of a 15-year-old girl found stabbed to death in 1978 has been arrested on a statutory rape charge involving his daughter's sexual assault.
Biloxi police took William Taylor into custody today after receiving the results of DNA tests performed by a private lab. Detectives said they had obtained a DNA sample from Taylor and sent it off to a crime lab along with evidence from the crime scene 33 years ago.
The Sun Herald profiled the case Oct. 9 in its recurring "Cold Case" series.
Sherri Lynne Taylor was stabbed multiple times and sexually assaulted before she was found dead on July 11, 1978, at her father's mobile home. Her father called police and said he returned home from work and found her dead.
The DNA tests identified William Taylor was the one who raped her, police said, but the tests did not provide evidence that he killed her. The mobile home was at the Sea and Sand, a park near Bossier's Arcade, where Sherri was working that summer.
