Police, along with the Jackson County District Attorney’s office, are investigating an officer who shot and killed a suspect early this morning, officials said.
The Pascagoula police officer, who has not been identified, was responding to an assault at 12:01 a.m. at Bandywood Apartment when he observed the suspect going north on Industrial Road, said Lt. James DeShannon Massey.
The officer conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 90 just east of Industrial Road. Floyd Beverly Jr., 40, exited his vehicle “ brandishing a firearm and engaged the officer,” Massey said.
The officer shot and killed Beverly.
The victim from the assault at the apartment is undergoing surgery for multiple stab wounds, Massey said in a release to the media this morning.
The FBI Safe Street Task Force, Moss Point Police Department, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Police Chief Kenny Johnson said “Tragically a man lost his life in this incident. The actions of the Pascagoula Police Department were necessary and justifiable.”
