Due to reports of lower numbers of endangered sea turtle sightings and strandings in Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has increased the trawling times for shrimping vessels using skimmer trawls to 55 minutes, effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
The tow time requirement is measured from the time the cod end of the trawl enters the water until the cod end is removed from the water.
The tow time was lowered in June 2010 due to an unusually high number of sea turtle sightings and strandings in the Mississippi Sound.
Reports of those sightings and strandings have been significantly lower, prompting the increase from 30 minutes to 55 minutes for skimmer trawls. There is no tow time requirement for skimmer trawls with TEDs (Turtle Excluder Devices) properly installed.
