If you cross paths with a black bear in MS while walking your dog, follow these tips to stay safe
From coffee shops to front yards, multiple people have reported seeing black bears across the Mississippi Coast in recent days.
The Magnolia State is home to anywhere between 80 and 100 black bears, and Louisiana black bears are the most common subspecies in the southern half of the state, according to wildlife experts at Mississippi State University.
While experts say attacks are rare, as black bears tend to avoid people, anyone who has spent time with dogs and bears knows the combination can lead to trouble.
So what happens if you spot a black bear while walking your dog in South Mississippi? Here’s what wildlife experts recommend.
What to do if you see a black bear while walking your dog in MS
While spotting a black bear can be scary, it’s important to remember that they aren’t predatory and are likely not looking to get you, wildlife experts said.
Because some dogs are prone to bark and chase, being near a bear can be provocative and dangerous, according to experts at Bearwise.
If you see a bear while walking your dog, you should get your dog inside so it can’t bark at or harass the bear, experts said. If your dog gets into a fight with a bear, try to use bear spray from a safe distance. Experts don’t recommend trying to rescue your dog as you will likely get injured.
What do black bears look like?
Black bears range in size from 3 to 6 feet long and can weigh up to 400 pounds, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, & Parks. They have round ears, short tails and black fur with a small patch of white on their chest, experts said.
Most bears live in forested or swampy areas but can wander closer to where people live in search of food, according to wildlife experts.

How to deter black bears from your home
