This versatile Southern delicacy can be drizzled in honey or covered in gravy, enjoyed as a snack or as a meal — and is the most iconic food in Mississippi, according to Food Network.

The biscuit is a Southern comfort food classic. A good biscuit should be fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside, and preferably, made in Natchez, the “biscuit capital of the world.”

So, here’s why, out of all the good food you can find in the Magnolia State, biscuits stand out as the most iconic.

Why Mississippi biscuits?

There’s a lot of good Southern comfort food to find in Mississippi, but according to Food Network, biscuits are the most iconic.

Once a special treat reserved for Sundays, biscuits are now common for most meals. A reason that they’re so good in Mississippi is because the type of wheat harvested in the state is perfect for making some of the best biscuits.

Soft Read Winter Wheat is the species of wheat grown in Mississippi, ideal for cakes, pastries and flat bread, according to the Mississippi Department of Agriculture.

Why is Natchez the biscuit capital of the world?

Natchez, a city of just under 15,000 located on the Mississippi River, is known as the biscuit capital of the world, according to Food Network.

In 2008, Paris-trained chef Regina Charboneau launched a biscuit festival with a cook-off, demos and biscuit queen crowning in Natchez, earning the official designation, the outlet reported.
