Celebrating Juneteenth in South MS — Your guide to sports, live music, poetry and more
Several Juneteenth celebrations are taking place across South Mississippi this weekend — from essay contests to basketball tournaments to live music.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday marking the end to slavery in the United States, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation of Proclamation. The holiday honors June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and signaled freedom for the state’s more than 250,000 enslaved people.
