A majority of Mississippians don’t believe they’ll live to reach 100 years of age, but two Coast communities have some of the strongest longevity mindsets, a recent survey finds.

Less than a quarter of residents in the Magnolia State, 18%, said they are “very likely” to see 100, according to the May study by A Mission for Michael, a residential mental health treatment provider for adults.

“One of the clearest patterns in the survey was that Americans overwhelmingly associate longevity with lifestyle rather than luck,” analysts said.

These are the communities in Mississippi where people seem to thrive well into later life, according to the survey.

Which MS communities have strong longevity mindsets?

These three towns have the strongest longevity mindsets in Mississippi, according to the survey:

1. Ocean Springs

2. Oxford

3. Bay St. Louis

Ocean Springs

According to analysts:

“Known for its arts scene and coastal setting, it encourages time outdoors, whether it’s walking through town or spending time near the water. The pace feels unhurried, and there’s a strong sense of local identity, which helps support both physical activity and social connection.”

Bay St. Louis

According to analysts:

“Bay St. Louis offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle shaped by its walkable streets and connection to the water. Daily life often includes time outdoors, whether that’s along the shoreline or through the town’s creative spaces.”

The nationally representative survey was conducted in May.
