This is where to set your thermostat in MS to save the most money in hot summer weather
As the weather warms across the state, some Mississippians could see a hike in the cost of their energy bill.
But there are a few easy things residents can do to save money this season on energy bills, according to experts.
“You can save money on your heating and cooling bills by simply resetting your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home,” officials at the United States Department of Energy said.
Summer officially begins Sunday, June 21, according to timeanddate.com.
Here’s where to set your thermostat during the summer and other tips for cutting energy costs during the hot summer months.
What is the most cost-effective thermostat setting during summer?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the closer the temperature of your home to the temperature outside, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
When you’re away from home, keep your house warmer than normal, and when you’re at home, keep your thermostat at a setting as high as comfortable for you, experts said.
Try not to set your thermostat at a colder than normal temperature when you first turn on your air conditioner. It will increase your energy bill cost without cooling your home any faster, according to experts.
Other ways to save energy in the summer
Here are some additional tips for saving energy in the summer, according to the U.S. Department of Energy:
- Install window coverings to prevent heat gain during the day
- Don’t set your thermostat at a colder than normal setting when you first turn on your air conditioner
- Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room
- Use the bathroom fan to remove heat and humidity from your home after taking a shower or bath
- Schedule regular maintenance for your cooling equipment
- Seal any cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home
- Lower your water heating costs
