How are tropical storms named?

Experts at the National Hurricane Center started creating lists to name storms in 1953, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Now, the list of names is managed by the World Meteorological Organization, weather experts said.

While some names have been retired due to the gravity of the storm, the two lists are typically used in rotation and recycled every six years, according to experts.

What happens if every name on the list is used?

If there are more storms than the names on the list, the new storms will take names from the previous season’s list of names, experts said.

What’s the storm forecast for the MS Coast?

Weather experts are expecting to see a “near to below” historical average number of storms for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

AccuWeather experts said they predict 11 to 16 will be named storms, with three to five of them having direct impact.

“Even if it’s expected to be a slightly below average hurricane season, we can still see major hits across the United States,” AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in a March 25 report.

The Mississippi Coast is included in an area of higher risk when it comes to storms that may make a landfall, an AccuWeather forecast shows.

Although there’s a lower chance of storms this year, warm Atlantic water could cause these storms to intensify quickly, experts said.
