  • Insurify ranks Mississippi among states with highest home insurance rates.
  • Mississippi’s average annual premium projected to be $3,833 by the end of 2026.
  • Insurers have pulled out of coastal markets, tightened guidelines, raised deductibles.

Mississippi’s home insurance rates are among the nation’s highest, with residents in the three Coastal counties paying the steepest prices in the state.

Insurify, an online platform where consumers can shop for insurance and compare rates, recently released its 2026 Home Insurance Report, which lists Mississippi in the Top 10 for homeowner insurance rates.

Mississippi ranks eighth, with Florida topping the list. Five of the top 10 states with the highest premiums are Gulf states, with Louisiana ranking second and Alabama in seventh place. The average annual premium in Mississippi is expected to be $3,833 by the end of 2026, according to Insurify.

Stronger hurricanes, more frequent flooding and other severe weather events associated with climate change are helping drive rate increases.

“Rising instances of severe weather have caused home insurance prices to soar in the 2020s,” an introduction to the Insurify report said. “Since 2021, the average cost of home insurance has risen nearly three times as fast as inflation (46% vs. 16%).”

No hurricanes hit U.S. land in 2025. Instead, Insurify reported, severe convective storms in 2025 were “the costliest driver of global insurer losses since 2000.”

Inflation also has paid a role, with an increase in construction costs upping the insured value of homes.

Highest home insurance costs by state

Here is a look at Insurify’s list of most expensive states for home insurance, which lists the average annual premium by the end of 2026, followed by the average increase for each state:

  • Florida: $8,458 (+2%)
  • Oklahoma: $5,205 (+5%)
  • Louisiana: $5,035 (0%)
  • Nebraska: $4,560 (+13%)
  • Texas: $4,529 (+3%)
  • Colorado: $4,164 (+4%)
  • Alabama: $3,979 (+1%)
  • Mississippi: $3,833 (+2%)
  • Minnesota: $3,654 (+4%)
  • Illinois: $3,559 (+5%)

The report notes that Mississippi fell from the second most expensive state for home insurance in 2023. The Mississippi Coast has by far the highest home insurance premiums in the state. The average annual cost of home insurance for the Gulfport-Biloxi metro area was $7,284 in 2025 and is expected to climb to $7,459 by the end of 2026, according to Insurify.

In addition to raising prices, home insurers are reducing their risk by pulling out of coastal markets or transferring risk to homeowners through higher deductibles. Underwriting guidelines also have tightened to require that homeowners trim or cut down trees around their homes, or replace their roofs after about 15 years, insurance agents have said.

Consumers try to cut their insurance premiums by shopping around for the best prices through an independent insurance agent or online comparison platform; checking for discounts that might not be obvious, such as savings for retired seniors or paying the annual premium in full; improving their credit score; or upgrading to stronger building standards for roofs and homes.
