As the tax filing deadline nears, certain Mississippi taxpayers could be in line for a financial boost with the state ranking among those with the highest refunds, a new study finds.
The deadline for the 2025 tax season is April 15, 2026, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
The average refund for taxpayers nationwide this year is $3,571, up 404 percentage points from the previous year, according to preliminary data analyzed in the April study by Upgraded Points, a travel website offering advice for credit card rewards and airline miles.
Here’s how much of a refund you could get in Mississippi and how that compares to other states.
What is the average tax refund in MS?
Several of the states with the highest average tax refund are located in the South and Mountain West, the Upgraded Points study found.
Mississippi has an average refund rate of 74% and ranks 8th-highest with an average tax refund of $4,018, according to the study.
The Magnolia State’s average refund is about 9% less than Florida, the state with the largest average refund, experts said.

How did travel website conduct ranking?
Upgraded Points analyzed data from the Internal Revenue Service and calculated the average refudn amount for each state by dividing the total amount of overpayments refunded by the total number of returns that resulted in a refund, analysts said.
