It’s also a violation to drive with missing or non-visible registration tags, according to the organization.
How do I know when my car registration expires?
Typically, Mississippi car owners will receive a courtesy renewal notice from their local county Tax Collector’s office each year, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
However, if you don’t get a renewal notice, it’s important to still remember to renew to avoid any penalties.
Is there a grace period for expired car registration in MS?
Yes, Mississippi has a grace period for late car registration renewal of 15 days following expiration, according to the DOR. However, you can still be pulled over for driving with expired tags.
If you haven’t paid your car registration after 15 days, the penalty fee is as follows, according to the DOR:
- 5% for the next 15 days
- Additional 5% for each 30 days the tag is overdue with a max of 25%
- After reaching the maximum penalty, car owners aren’t allowed to receive the Legislative Tag Credit
