A Mississippi Coast town was named one of the best places in the state to visit this spring for its artistry, outdoor cuisine and foliage, according to a recent survey.

Ocean Springs, a town of nearly 20,000 people, is the perfect spring destination, according to a national survey by Portland Real Estate, published March 6.

“Azaleas and camellias brighten the galleries, cottages, and live oak canopy of the walkable downtown, while warmer weather draws visitors to explore on foot,” Portland Real Estate survey analysts said.

Here’s what to do in Ocean Springs and where else you should visit this season.

What to do in Ocean Springs

Here are some things you can’t miss during your spring visit to Ocean Springs, according to Coastal Mississippi:

  • Get outside at the Gulf Islands National Seashore Visitor Center & Campground
  • Bike on the shady Live Oaks Bicycle Route
  • Stroll the Walter Anderson Museum of Art
  • Try your hand at ceramics at Shearwater Pottery
  • Tour the Charnley-Norwood House designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in 1890

Top three ‘most beautiful’ MS neighborhoods for spring

These are the top spots to visit in Mississippi this spring and what analysts said about each spot, according to the Portland Real Estate survey:

1. Garden District, Natchez

“Throughout the Natchez Garden District, antebellum homes and centuries-old oaks frame the full bloom, and the neighborhood’s deep history and carefully preserved architecture make it worth visiting in any season. But the color of early spring adds a dimension that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.”

2. Historic District, Ocean Springs

“Long a magnet for artists and independent spirits, Ocean Springs shows its creative energy in the shops and restaurants lining the main street-and spring only enhances the atmosphere.”

3. Belhaven, Jackson

“Each March, Belhaven delivers one of the best azalea displays in Jackson. The gardens and front yards of this established neighborhood fill with vivid color, oak-lined streets and 1920s bungalows providing the backdrop.”
