The sun is setting later, making the days feel a little longer. That means spring is coming soon.

But what will spring look like this year on the Mississippi Coast, and what are the chances of severe weather?

Here’s the spring forecast for the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

When is the first day of spring?

Spring officially begins Friday, March 20, according to timeanddate.com. It will last for 92 days, until the summer solstice on June 21.

Spring weather predictions from the Farmers’ Almanac

Most of the United States, including the Mississippi Coast, is expected to experience a “warmer-than-normal” spring, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts.

In the Deep South region — which includes Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Alabama — April is expected to bring temperatures up to 4 degrees Fahrenheit above average.

Below normal precipitation is predicted for the southern part of the region throughout the season, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

Predictions from National Weather Service and AccuWeather experts

The National Weather Service anticipates higher temperatures than normal for spring in Mississippi, with temperatures about 33 to 40% higher than average for the season, experts said.

AccuWeather experts agreed, and said spring warmth is expected to arrive quicker for the southern half of the country.

“You go back to last year, it was pretty warm,” said Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather lead long-range meteorologist. “In fact, we had the second-warmest spring on record last year. This area of the country again could feel early heat.”

The Mississippi Valley and Gulf states are at risk for severe weather, including storms, flooding and tornadoes, especially during March and April, AccuWeather experts said.
