Nike choice to cut 775 jobs at distribution centers to impact MS workers. Here’s what we know
Nike will cut about 775 jobs across Tennessee and Mississippi in an effort to consolidate its domestic distribution center.
A company spokesperson told the Biloxi Sun Herald the move is intended to improve EBIT margins.
“We are sharpening our supply chain footprint, accelerating the use of advanced technology and automation, and investing in the skills our teams need for the future,” the spokesperson said.
The layoffs come as United States-based employers announced the highest number of job cuts in January since 2009, according to a Feb. 5 news release by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a global outplacement and executive coaching firm.
How many job cuts did U.S. employers announce in January?
In January, 108,435 jobs were slashed, up 118% from the number of cuts announced in January 2025, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
The report found the following industries to be impacted the most by the January job cuts: transportation, technology, healthcare/products, chemical, media and news.
“Generally, we see a high number of job cuts in the first quarter, but this is a high total for January. It means most of these plans were set at the end of 2025, signaling employers are less-than-optimistic about the outlook for 2026,” Andy Challenger, workplace expert and chief revenue officer at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in the release.
What does that mean for Nike workers in MS?
Nike has a distribution center in Byhalia, Mississippi, about a 42-mile drive southeast from Memphis.
As the company consolidates, workers at this center will be impacted by the job cuts. It was unclear how many people the distribution center in Byhalia employs.
