Flu season is in full swing across the United States, with the number of reported influenza-like illnesses continuing to increase, according to federal data.
Several states, including Mississippi, reported “high” or “very high” levels of influenza-like illnesses for the week ending in Dec. 27, with the most frequently reported influenza virus being H3N2 — also known as “super flu,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows.

What is Mississippi’s rate of reported flu-like illnesses?
Mississippi’s rate of reported influenza-like cases jumped from 3.9% for the week ending Dec. 20 to 5.2% for the week ending in Dec. 27, according to the latest data from the Mississippi State Department of Health.
While cases are increasing, the number of reported cases for this time period is 2.6 percentage points lower than this time period last year, the data shows.
Where in Mississippi is the flu spreading the most?
A majority of the state — including districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 — reported an increase in influenza-like illnesses for the week ending in Dec. 27, according to MSDH data.
Two districts, 4 and 9, showed a decrease in reported cases, the data shows.

Mississippians can take the following precautions to prevent the spread of flu-like illnesses, according to the CDC:
- Stay up to date with all eligible vaccinations
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Wash hands often
- Clean frequently touched surfaces
- Take steps for cleaner air
