For some folks, the busy holiday season means more parties in the neighborhood. But what if those parties are so loud they shake your house down the street?

Mississippi has state and local rules for noise control, so there are a few things you can do if loud holiday parties along the Mississippi Gulf Coast just aren’t your cup of tea.

Here’s how to deal with noisy neighbors, according to state and local law.

What does state law say about noise complaints?

It is illegal for anyone to make noise with sound systems or musical instruments that annoys or disturbs the peace of people in offices, hotels or residences, according to state law.

The penalty for violating this rule is a misdemeanor and a fine of up to $100.

In Biloxi, it is “unlawful for any person to make, continue or cause to be made or continued any loud noise or any other noise which disturbs, injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health peace or safety of others within the city,” according to city ordinances.

It’s also the property owner or tenants responsibility to stop the noise disturbances, according to the ordinance which states that there is a $250 fine — potentially each day — for the violation.

The city also has specific times when loud noises, including construction, cannot be made. See all the rules here.
