2 MS restaurants offering food help during SNAP freeze. Here’s where, what deals

Two Mississippi restaurants are offering donations and free food in response to the pause on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, according to social media posts.

Due to the ongoing government shutdown, the United States Department of Agriculture froze federal funding for SNAP on Nov. 1, impacting more than 350,000 Mississippians among the estimated 42 million Americans who rely on the program for food each month.

The Trump administration on Nov. 3 said it will partially fund SNAP after two federal judges ruled Oct. 31 that the freeze is unlawful.

Several restaurants across the country — including Elvie’s in Jackson and Pizza Grocery in Corinth — announced plans to help families amid the uncertainty.

Here’s what to know about the deals announced at Mississippi restaurants.

Elvie’s

Elvie’s, an all-day cafe in Jackson, said in an Oct. 31 post on Facebook that for every Harvest Prix Fixe dinner purchased, they will donate 30 meals to Mississippi Food Network, a nonprofit organization that distributes food to Mississippians in need.

The restaurant is also providing donation options at the bottom of receipts and accepting donations on Venmo, according to the post.

“Politics aside, we care about everyone having access to what they need, and hospitality is more than what happens in our dining room,” Elvie’s said in the post.

The Harvest Prix Fixe dinner goes through Nov. 22, according to a previous post.

Pizza Grocery

Pizza Grocery, an Italian restaurant in Corinth, is offering free kids meals for children until SNAP benefits are reinstated, according to an Oct. 29 post on Facebook.

“We do not intend to take sides or make this offer political — we simply believe that no child should go hungry,” the restaurant said in the post.

No purchase is required for the offer. Meals are limited to one per child and only offered as a dine-in option, according to the post.
