These 10 vehicles are stolen the most in MS, report says. Did yours make the list?
Vehicle thefts are declining in Mississippi and across the United States, after years of a “pandemic-fueled surge,” according to a recent report.
The number of stolen vehicles nationally peaked in 2023 and have since been trending toward pre-pandemic levels, according to a Sept. 17 report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Washington, D.C., California, Nevada and New Mexico were among the states with the highest vehicle theft rates in the first half of 2025, according to the NICB. The Magnolia State ranked 28th nationally for vehicle theft rate per capita, with 2,283 thefts, the report found.
But depending on which state you’re in, certain vehicle models are more often stolen than others, according to the report.

Most stolen vehicles in MS this year
These were the most frequently stolen vehicles in the first half of 2025, according to the NICB:
1. Nissan Altima: 81 reported thefts
2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 57
3. Honda Accord: 56
4. Toyota Camry: 50
5. Hyundai Elantra: 49
6. Ford F150 Series: 47
7. Hyundai Sonata: 46
8. Dodge Charger: 43
9. Chevrolet Tahoe: 37
10. Chevrolet Malibu: 32
Several car models — excluding Chevrolet Tahoes and Chevrolet Malibus — were on the NICB’s list of most stolen vehicles in 2024. Kia Optimas, Nissan Maximas and Chevrolet Camaros also made the list of most stolen vehicles in 2024 but were not among the top stolen vehicles for the first half of 2025.

These were the top 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S. for the first quarter of 2025, according to the NICB:
1. Hyundai Elantra: 11,329 reported thefts nationwide
2. Hyundai Sonata: 9,154
3. Honda Accord: 8,531
4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 8,006
5. Honda Civic: 6,396
6. Kia Optima: 6,011
7. Ford F150: 4,996
8. Toyota Camry: 4,986
9. Honda CR-V: 4,889
10. Kia Soul: 4,380
How to protect your vehicle from theft
Each year, more than 850,000 drivers experience vehicle theft; that’s about one vehicle every 37 seconds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Here are some tips for keeping your vehicle safe from theft, according to the NICB:
- Park in well-lit areas
- Roll up your windows
- Lock your doors
- Never leave your vehicle running while unattended
- Always take your keys with you
- Consider anti-theft technology, like steering wheel locks, audible alarms, kill switches or air tags
What to do if your car is stolen
If your vehicle is stolen, the NHTSA recommends following these steps, according to their website:
1. Contact the police immediately. You will need:
- Copy of police report and case number for your insurance company
- License plate number
- Make, model and color of your vehicle
- Vehicle Identification Number
2. Contact your insurance company and file a claim within 24 hours of vehicle theft
3. If you find your vehicle before authorities, contact the police and your insurance company instantly
