With Americans facing the highest number of layoffs in the last five years, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, many jobseekers are placing a high value on career growth plans when searching for their next role, a new survey found.

Careerminds, a global outplacement service, asked workers across the United States and in Mississippi which companies they would most like to work at if the “only criteria” were career development, according to an Oct. 16 news release.

“What really stood out in this survey is that employees don’t just want training; they want a clear map of where it can take them,” Careerminds President Raymond Lee said in the news release.

Here are the top three choices for workers in Mississippi, according to the Careerminds survey.

1. Peavey Electronics in Meridian

One of the biggest global suppliers of music instruments and audio systems, Peavy Electronics ranked at the top spot for where Mississippians would want to work if the sole focus was career development, according to Careerminds.

Founded in 1965, Peavey Electronics distributes more than 2,000 products across 120 countries, according to the company’s website.

“Staff point to opportunities to grow within a company that has long invested in engineering and manufacturing talent,” researchers said.

2. University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the only academic medical center and one of the largest employers in the state, according to the UMMC’s website.

The center includes six health science schools, specializing in “medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies, and popular health.”

“Employees highlighted structured training and advancement in nursing, medicine and administration,” researchers said.

3. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula

Ingalls Shipbuilding was ranked third for employers Mississippians would most want to work at if career development was the only criteria, according to the Careerminds survey.

Headquartered in Virginia, Ingalls Shipbuilding is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi, according to the company’s website.

For more than 80 years, the company has designed, built and maintained ships for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, the company’s website states.

“Ingalls continues to be recognized as a place where long-term industrial careers are supported by clear advancement opportunities,” researchers said.

How do workers feel about career security in an age of AI?

Forty-two percent of workers said they were “very confident” their employers are getting them ready for industry changes, like the implementation of AI, while 16% said they were “somewhat confident, according to the survey. Seventeen percent of respondents said they were “unsure.”

A majority of respondents, 73%, said they’d be more inclined to stay with a company long-term if it had a clear career framework, researchers said.

How did Careerminds conduct survey?

Careerminds asked 3,002 workers which U.S. companies they would want to work for most if career progression was the main criteria, researchers said. The survey was conducted in September.
