Online dating safety varies by state, and Mississippi is a mix, according to a survey by PrivacyJournal. The online privacy and security website ranked each state based on how safe it is for people looking for a date through online sites or apps.

Mississippi ranked #26 for online dating safety, according to the PrivacyJournal study, published in August.

Researchers collected data for six factors and weighted them based on importance to come up with the ranking, according to the study. These are the factors and how they were weighted:

1. Romance scams: 20 points

2. Identity theft reports: 16 points

3. Fraud: 16 points

4. Registered sex offenders: 16 points

5. STDs reports: 16 points

6. Violent crime: 16 points

Online dating safety in Mississippi is a mix, according to PrivacyJournal. The Magnolia state has the lowest rate of romance scam reports when compared to any other state but the highest amount of reported STDs, the study found.
