A Democratic district attorney is the latest to announce his bid for U.S. Senate in Mississippi, challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Scott Colom said he was running for U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections in a Sep. 3 video on X formerly known as Twitter, that criticized Hyde-Smith.

“Her latest vote is going to run up our debt, kick over 100,000 Mississippians off their healthcare and put our hospitals at risk all so billionaires in California and New York can get a tax break,” Colom said in the video.

Colom and Hyde-Smith clashed two years ago when the senator blocked Colom’s nomination to a federal judge position.

In a Sep. 3 video on X, Hyde-Smith accused Colom of being “soft on crime” and being elected through funding by New York billionaire George Soros among other things. Soros did not directly donate to Colom’s campaign.

Colom enters the race alongside Ty Pinkins, a U.S. Army Veteran who announced his run as an Independent in January.

Here’s what to know about the Democratic candidate.

Who is Scott Colom?

Scott Colom — a Democrat from Columbus, Mississippi — is the district attorney for Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee counties.

He was elected in 2015, four years after becoming the first Black justice court judge in Lowndes county, according to the District Attorney’s Office for the Sixteenth Circuit Court of Mississippi.

Colom is a member of the Mission Union Baptist Church in Columbus, according to his website.

He’s campaigning on the following initiatives, according to the video announcing his candidacy:

  • Boosting wages for Mississippi workers
  • Eliminating income taxes on teachers and cops
  • Saving Mississippi hospitals
