Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day to take place in Mississippi. What to know
Gov. Tate Reeves has proclaimed a statewide day of remembrance to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the state’s deadliest natural disaster in recent history.
Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day is Friday, Aug. 29, Gov. Reeves announced, according to an Aug. 26 news release from his office.
As part of the commemoration, Mississippians are encouraged to join in a statewide minute of silence starting at 8:29 a.m. Aug. 29, according to the release.
The minute of silence will be held “in memory of the lives lost, a recognition of the resilience of Mississippi communities, and a reflection on the journey of recovery and hope,” according to the governor’s office.
Gov. Reeves, the Mississippi National Guard and other state agencies will host a 20th Anniversary commemoration in Gulfport. Commemoration ceremonies will also be held in different cities across the Gulf Coast.
