Cities in America are growing again and most people relocating are doing so right now, experts said.

Forty-one percent of annual moves in the U.S. happen between May and August, making summer the busiest season to move, according to July data from moveBuddha.

Most Mississippians relocating don’t go too far, the data found. The state is among the top three for people moving from the shortest distances, alongside West Virginia and Delaware, according to the report.

But two cities, Houston and Atlanta, are hot spots for people in Mississippi willing to go the extra mile, a July 2025 U-Haul report found. The state ranked among the top origin states in both cities for U-Haul customers moving there, according to the report.

Here are the origin states in order for U-Haul customers arriving in each city.

Some states are more appealing for Americans on the move. These are the states that gained the most new residents in 2024 while keeping the population they already had, according to the moveBuddha report:

6. Arkansas

7. Wyoming

8. West Virginia

9. South Dakota

10. Alaska

How far are people moving?

Most people, 75%, moved somewhere within the same state in 2024, the moveBuddha report found.

Here are some other distances people moved:

  • Same county: 49.87%
  • Different county but same state: 25.19%
  • Different state: 18.88%
  • Different country: 6.06%
