MS has one of the top 5 ‘ugliest’ buildings in the US, survey finds. Here’s where
Pascagoula — home of the late American singer Jimmy Buffett — recently received another legendary accolade: having one of the country’s biggest eye-sores for a public building, according to a survey.
The old Jackson County Courthouse ranks fourth on a list of the country’s top 100 “ugliest” public buildings, according to a July New Jersey Real Estate Network survey of more than 3,000 Americans.
The courthouse’s boxy shape and minimal exterior detail, resembles a trio of cinderblocks and lands it at the top of a list of unattractive structures mostly made up of city buildings, according to the survey.
“It’s a building that blends into the background — quietly, and perhaps a little too well,” researchers said about the courthouse.
Jackson County Courts Building history
Jackson County has seen multiple courthouses, with some of the first ones in cities in the northern part of the county, according to county’s history web page.
In 1904, when Scranton and Pascagoula combined into one city, Pascagoula was named the permanent county seat, according to the web page
The old courthouse opened in 1950, county records show. It houses the sheriff, district attorney and circuit clerk offices, according to Chief Deputy Circuit Clerk Valerie Damazio.
The county’s newer courthouse, located behind the old courthouse building, has chancery, county and circuit court rooms, Damazio said.
