An early morning incident resulted in the death of one person Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 8:20 a.m., an Amtrak train struck Arizona native James Ferrara, 39, who was walking the tracks near CT Switzer Sr. and Eisenhower drives. Ferrara was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was walking down the middle of the tracks, westbound, and the train approached from his rear,” said Brian Switzer, Harrison County coroner. “The train honked, but it looks like he had headphones on and didn’t hear it. They placed the train in emergency mode but still struck him.”

The train had no passengers at the time of the wreck.

“The only occupants were crew members and we didn’t have any injuries,” said Marc Magliari, senior spokesperson for Amtrak. “We’ve been training crew members for the new route through there.”

The train was delayed and the road was blocked while the incident was under investigation.
