Traffic congestion has returned to Interstate 10 at Menge Avenue in Pass Christian Wednesday as the westbound inside lane is closed as a part of ongoing construction to replace overpass and make way for Buc-ee’s.

According to MDOT, drivers can expect congestion between the Menge Avenue exit and County Farm Road throughout the day on Wednesday as the westbound inside lane will be closed until 4 p.m.

At 12 p.m. on Wednesday, the congestion duration was expected to last more than four hours.

The westbound outside lane on I-10 will be closed on Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., which will likely cause similar congestion then.

The Menge Avenue overpass closed on Monday as a part of a 13-month-long project to replace the overpass with a bridge that can accommodate five lanes of traffic in preparation for the future Buc-ee’s Travel Center planned near the exit. Traffic delays on the interstate will continue intermittently throughout the project as crews work to demolish the current bridge and replace it.

Major congestion continues Wednesday on I-10 westbound near the Louisiana state line in Hancock County as the right lane is closed at the East Pearl River Bridge until Friday, July 21.

According to a press release from MDOT, crews removed the concrete bridge railing over the weekend and will replace it with a new concrete railing this week. Following that, crews will demolish the concrete bridge deck in the right lane of I-10 and then replace it.

Lane closures and traffic delays are expected to continue in the area until August 11 while repairs are made on the East Pearl River Bridge following several accidents.

Drivers can sign up for email and text alerts from MDOT regarding traffic. They are sent throughout the day to caution drivers about major delays and slow-moving traffic. Drivers also can check MDOT’s traffic map before they leave home.

“MDOT traffic app is a great resource for road conditions throughout the state,” MDOT Public Information Officer Anna Ehrgott told the Sun Herald on Monday. It can be downloaded to a smartphone and will provide alerts while traveling.
