Ammunition and a note were found in a restroom at Ocean Springs High School on Wednesday, prompting a ‘shelter in place’ for about three hours, Ocean Springs School District spokesperson Trey Brennan said in a phone interview.

According to Brennan, the high school went into a “shelter in place” warning around 9 a.m. after a student found a small plastic bag of ammunition and a note in a restroom. Brennan was not able to elaborate on the nature of the note, what type of ammunition was found or if it was found in a men’s or women’s restroom, due to an ongoing investigation.

The school district’s own police force, Ocean Springs School District Police Department, is investigating the incident and will review security camera footage to determine who left the ammunition in the restroom, according to Brennan.

In communications that went out to parents, the school went into the shelter in place due to a “report of an unauthorized item on campus.” The shelter in place ended around noon on Wednesday.

According to the district, a shelter in place is when students and employees stay in their classrooms and offices and keep the hallways clear. No one is allowed to enter or leave the school during a shelter in place and they are primarily used for medical emergencies so emergency services can get in and out of the building efficiently. A shelter in place is one step removed from a lockdown — students are able to keep learning during a shelter in place.

During the shelter in place, the district asked that parents not come or make phone calls to the school as it could interfere with operations.
