Update: Hattiesburg man was shot in officer-involved shooting in Gulfport

The Gulfport Police Department has identified a man who was shot by an officer on Tuesday afternoon.

Corwin Joshua Wilcher, 22, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was shot when two officers from the Gulfport Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit were attempting to conduct a traffic stop near U.S. 90 and Hewes Avenue, according to officials.

Wilcher showed the officer a gun before being shot, a press release said.

Wilcher was driving a white Hyundai Elantra with Pearl River County plates that said “BONDSMN”. At the scene, police officers could be seen placing evidence markers in the middle of Hewes Avenue.

It is unclear what time the incident occurred, as Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper said during an interview that the shooting took place around 2 p.m. but the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the shooting took place around 4 p.m.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. However, Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper said the suspect was in critical condition.

The officers were not injured.

MBI is currently assessing the shooting and gathering evidence. Upon completing an investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
